Coorg travel guide: this account is based on my three-day stay in Madikeri in June 2023, just before the monsoon. We flew into Mangaluru, drove to Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa, visited a coffee estate and explored Madikeri’s shops and food. Below I’ve added a practical three-day plan, route options, vegetarian notes and reminders to recheck current prices and access before you go.

My Coorg Trip at a Glance

A Practical 3-Day Coorg Travel Guide Itinerary
This Coorg travel guide itinerary uses Madikeri as a base to group nearby sights into three manageable days. It is a suggested plan built around our stay and coffee-estate visit; distances and weather can change how much you can comfortably fit in.
Day 1: Arrive, settle in and explore Madikeri
Allow most of the day for the road journey and check-in. Keep the afternoon unhurried: enjoy your hotel or homestay, then visit Raja’s Seat or walk around central Madikeri if you arrive early and the weather is clear. Have dinner in town or at your stay.
Day 2: Coffee estate and Abbey Falls
Book a guided coffee-estate visit in advance, ideally in the morning, and ask how long the tour takes. Pair it with Abbey Falls, around 8 km from Madikeri, if access and weather allow. The official visitor guidance says people should stay at the viewing points and not enter the water. Leave time to return to town for dinner.
Day 3: Pick one longer excursion
Choose Talakaveri and Bhagamandala for a longer temple-and-mountain drive, or arrange an authorized jeep to Mandalpatti for a viewpoint outing. Dubare and the Golden Temple at Bylakuppe are another direction, better planned as a separate Kushalnagar-area day. Avoid trying to combine all of these in one day; check current opening, road and weather conditions with local operators first.

I had heard so much about the Taj property in Madikeri that I decided to stay there. It is one of the most beautiful hotel settings I have visited in India.
Coorg Travel Guide: Mangaluru to Madikeri by Road
There is no airport or railway station in Kodagu. Mangaluru International Airport is about 137 km from Kodagu; Mysuru Airport is about 121 km from Madikeri, and Kannur International Airport about 120 km. For our Coorg travel guide, we flew to Mangaluru, stayed overnight and took a cab the next morning; the drive took around four hours. Check your route and transfer time with the driver, as road conditions and traffic affect the journey. See the Kodagu district’s official transport information for current access details.
Taj Madikeri is situated around 10 km from the main town and it is carved along the sides of the hill and as soon as one reaches the reception, the view is stunning, no pictures can do justice to the view.
The property is carved into the side of a steep hill in a forest reserve. After sunset, bright lights and loud sounds are restricted to help preserve the forest’s quiet.
The rooms and food are expensive, but the location is stunning and the service during our three-day stay was nearly flawless. There was so much to explore within the resort that we hardly wanted to venture out. Here are a few places of interest around Madikeri:
- Coffee estate visit…there are several in the area , you can choose the one nearest to you…
- visit to buy local spices and chocolates…Coorg Greens in the main town is an excellent one stop shop…you will get all the spices there and their sister shop next door has amazing variety of chocolates… we got lots of chocolates from there, all were very good , the coffee and Paan flavoured ones were excellent.
- Coorg Cuisine restaurant is famous amongst tourists, since it is known for its non-veg food, we , being vegetarians gave it a miss…
Coorg’s Natural Beauty
Madikeri town is quite small and laid – back …apart from natural beauty there is not much to do but the natural beauty is as beautiful as it gets…see the pictures below to get some idea of it but let me tell you that it is much more beautiful than it appears..Coorg is Truly a Stunningly Beautiful place…you will feel you are in Eden.
Coorg for Vegetarians
Coorg is known for pork and meat dishes, and as vegetarians we skipped the famous Coorg Cuisine restaurant. You’ll still eat well: try kuru curry (a bean curry with Coorg spices) at Raintree or The Fort Mercara, along with akki roti and kadambuttu (rice dumplings). Ask about bamboo shoot curry in season. For treats to take home, the coffee- and paan-flavoured chocolates we bought at Coorg Greens were excellent.
Coorg Travel Guide to Five Local Restaurants
This Coorg travel guide includes five Madikeri restaurants for tasting Kodava cooking, from peppery curries and pork specialties to rice breads and steamed rice dumplings. Check opening hours and confirm current menus before setting out. Prices below are per dish unless a per-person range is specified, and restaurant menus can change.
- Thaliya – Traditional Kodava Restaurant — Try the pork specialties with akki otti or kadambuttu; its Pandi Chidkan Green is listed at about ₹280. It is in Brahmins Valley, Madikeri.
- Raintree Restaurant — A bungalow-style dining room near Town Hall. Its Kuru Curry, made with fresh beans and Coorg spices, is a good vegetarian local dish (about ₹225); mains and local specialties vary.
- The Fort Mercara — Look for Coorg dishes such as Kuru Curry (about ₹180), bamboo-shoot curry and pork preparations. It is at the Kodava Samaja Complex on Main Road.
- The Coorg Food House — A casual stop on Mysore Road for pork fry, pork curry, Coorg-style chicken and akki otti. Plan around ₹200–₹400 per person.
- New Freeman’s Family Restaurant & Bakery — Browse its Coorg-style curries and fries; Coorg Mutton Fry is listed around ₹450 per dish, with simpler options such as akki rotti also available.
Food prices shown are guide prices; delivery-app and dine-in prices may differ. Ask about seasonal dishes such as bamboo shoot curry.
Coorg Travel Guide to Shopping in Madikeri
This Coorg travel guide points to central Madikeri shops for coffee, homemade chocolates, spices and small gifts. Product ranges and opening hours can change, so check with each shop before making a special trip. For perfumes, look for locally made or regionally sourced attar and essential-oil products, and check the label for origin.
- Coorg Greens — A central one-stop shop for Coorg coffee, chocolates, pepper and other spices, along with honey, soaps, oils and personal-care items. Its range has included roll-on attar, making it a useful stop for fragrance gifts too. Located on KSRTC Bus Stand Road, Madikeri.
- Coorg Flavours — Browse filter coffee, homemade chocolates, spice mixes and souvenirs near the Omkareshwara Temple area. A handy stop when exploring central Madikeri.
- Choci Coorg by Hillock Chocolate — Shop for handmade chocolates alongside coffee, spices, honey, tea, soaps, essential oils and gift hampers. Check the current store details and product availability before visiting.
- Pallaki Wines & Spices — A specialty shop in Madikeri for Coorg coffee, pepper, cardamom and other spices, as well as chocolates and local wine selections. Ask which products are locally made and in season.
- Coffee Bean Coorg Spices — A Mahadevpet stop for coffee, homemade chocolates, spices, teas and small gifts. It is listed at Hotel New Chithra Building on Junior College Road; confirm current hours on the map listing.
Five Coorg Excursions to Add to Your Itinerary
- Walk a coffee and spice estate — At Mercara Gold Estate, about 8 km from Madikeri, guided walks cover coffee growing, processing and roasting; the estate also offers museum and chocolate-factory options. Reserve directly and check the current tour schedule.
- Visit Abbey Falls — A short outing from Madikeri to a broad waterfall reached by a path through coffee country. Karnataka Tourism currently lists visiting hours as 9 am–5 pm; access and conditions can change with weather.
- Take a 4×4 jeep to Mandalpatti — The high viewpoint is known for cloud and valley views at sunrise or sunset. It is roughly 18 km from Madikeri; arrange an authorized jeep locally and confirm road and weather conditions.
- Plan a Dubare riverside visit — Pair the Cauvery-side camp and forest setting with a day in the Kushalnagar area. Check the official tourism listing for current access, timings and available activities before travelling.
- Make a Talakaveri and Bhagamandala day trip — Visit the sacred river source and the temple landscape, with mountain views near Brahmagiri. Talakaveri is about 46 km from Madikeri, so allow time for the winding hill drive.

Coorg Travel Guide: Prices and Practical Info
This Coorg travel guide includes approximate prices (checked September 2026) for the restaurants, shops and excursions above. Prices change by season and at weekends.
Getting There
- From Bengaluru: About 260 km (5–6 hours by road). A taxi one way costs roughly ₹5,500–8,000. KSRTC buses cost about ₹400–900.
- Nearest airports: Mangaluru (about 137 km from Kodagu), Mysuru (about 121 km from Madikeri) and Kannur (about 120 km from Madikeri). Distances vary by route.
Entry Fees (Approx.)
- Raja’s Seat: About ₹20, plus about ₹30 for the toy train. Open 9 am – 8 pm, with the musical fountain in the evening.
- Abbey Falls: A small entry fee (about ₹15–30), plus parking.
- Dubare Elephant Camp: Activity tickets vary, so go early (by 8:30 am) for the elephant bathing.
- Talakaveri and Bhagamandala: Free. Namdroling (Golden Temple), Bylakuppe: Free.
Approx. Stay and Food Costs
- Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa (where I stayed): Roughly ₹20,000–40,000 a night. Coffee-estate homestays: About ₹2,500–10,000 (the average is around ₹4,000), often with home-cooked Kodava meals.
- Local restaurants: About ₹300–800 per person. Must-tries are pandi curry (pork), akki roti, kadambuttu and bamboo shoot curry, and vegetarians do well too. Estate coffee and spices cost about ₹200–600 per pack.
Best time: October to March is generally best for sightseeing. June to September is lush and rainy, but heavy showers can make roads slippery and limit outdoor plans; check local conditions.
Coorg Travel Guide FAQs
Is three days enough for Coorg?
Three days is enough for a relaxed Madikeri-based visit with a coffee estate, nearby sights and one longer day trip. Coorg is a large district, so allow extra days if you also want to cover Kushalnagar, Nagarhole or southern Kodagu.
When is the best time to visit Coorg?
October to March is generally the easiest season for sightseeing and outdoor plans. June to September brings lush greenery and strong waterfall flow, but also heavy rain, slippery roads and possible changes to outdoor activities. Check the forecast and local access before setting out.
How do I reach Madikeri?
Madikeri is reached by road; Kodagu has no airport or railway station. Mangaluru, Mysuru and Kannur are the nearest airport options listed by the district administration, and the best one depends on your flight and onward road connection.
Can visitors enter the water at Abbey Falls?
No. Karnataka Tourism advises visitors to view the falls from the designated viewpoints and not enter the water. Follow any local closures and safety directions on the day.
