This Kerala travel guide brings together my trips to Kochi, Kumarakom and Munnar: green landscapes, backwaters, historic streets and places to stay. Kochi is the part of Kerala I return to most fondly, and this guide pairs my photographs and experiences with practical planning notes for a visit to Fort Kochi and Kumarakom.
There’s something magnetic about Kochi: centuries of trade and culture meet along its waterfront. Chinese fishing nets frame the harbour, historic streets lead past Portuguese-era architecture, and the city’s food reflects its coastal setting.

Kerala Travel Guide: Planning Kochi and Kumarakom
Use this Kerala travel guide to plan a short break, allowing at least two nights in Kochi and one or two nights in Kumarakom. Fort Kochi is about 36.5 km from Cochin International Airport. Kumarakom is about 94 km from the airport and around 13 km from Kottayam railway station; confirm current travel times before setting transfers.
When to visit
October to March is generally the more comfortable period for sightseeing. The monsoon months bring heavier rain and lush scenery, but can affect boat schedules and outdoor plans. Check the local forecast and confirm services with your hotel before travelling.
Getting around
For Kochi, use local taxis or public transport to reach Fort Kochi. Check current Kochi Metro and Water Metro routes, operating hours and fares on the official Kochi Metro website. Arrange the Kochi–Kumarakom transfer in advance, especially if arriving late.

The sixth Kochi-Muziris Biennale, titled “For the Time Being”, ran from 12 December 2025 to 31 March 2026 and has concluded. Check the Biennale Foundation’s official site for announcements about future editions and current cultural events.
Kerala Travel Guide: How to Divide Time Between Kochi and Kumarakom
Start in Fort Kochi if you want to explore on foot. Give yourself time for the heritage streets, waterfront and cultural venues, and leave room for a relaxed meal rather than packing every stop into one day. The town is also a useful base for arranging local transport and checking the day’s weather before outdoor plans.
Then move to Kumarakom for a quieter backwater stay. One or two nights gives you time to enjoy the lakeside setting and arrange a boat experience through your accommodation or a licensed local operator. Ask what is included, how long the trip lasts, where it starts and whether the plan changes during heavy rain. Boat services and availability can vary by season.
Choosing where to stay
In Kochi, choose a base in or near Fort Kochi if historic lanes, cafés and waterfront sights are your priority. Consider access to taxis and public transport if you expect to travel across the wider city. In Kumarakom, decide whether you prefer a resort or a houseboat experience; compare what the quoted rate includes, such as meals, transfers, boat time and taxes. Read the cancellation terms and check recent guest reviews before paying a deposit.
Simple itinerary for a short visit
Day 1: Arrive in Kochi, settle in and keep the afternoon flexible for Fort Kochi. Day 2: Explore the historic area and waterfront, with time for a museum or cultural venue that is open on your travel date. Day 3: Transfer to Kumarakom and enjoy a slower afternoon by the lake. Day 4: Take a pre-arranged backwater outing if conditions allow, then continue your onward journey. Add another night if you want to include Munnar without rushing the road transfers.
