Kovalam Travel Guide: Beaches, Cliffs and Kerala Coast

Kovalam Kerala is one of the most relaxed coastal escapes in South India, and recently I had a few days to spare and since I have visited Goa and Kochi/Kumarakom mutiple times in recent years, I decided to head to Pondicherry ( Puducherry ) and Kovalam.

Kovalam: Where the Arabian Sea Meets Kerala’s Soul

Crescent-shaped beaches, swaying coconut palms, and the rhythmic crash of Arabian Sea waves—welcome to Kovalam, Kerala’s most celebrated coastal retreat. Just 16 kilometers south of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), this laid-back beach town has been drawing travelers since the 1930s, when the Maharaja of Travancore built his beach resort here. Today, Kovalam is a perfect blend of old-world Kerala charm and coastal ease. The town centers around three main beaches—Lighthouse Beach with its iconic red-and-white striped tower, the quieter Hawah Beach, and the more secluded Samudra Beach—each offering its own slice of paradise. Unlike some of India’s more crowded beach destinations, Kovalam maintains an unhurried pace where days are measured by tides rather than clocks. Beyond sunbathing and swimming, Kovalam has become synonymous with Ayurvedic wellness. The town is dotted with authentic treatment centers where ancient healing traditions are practiced with the same care they have been for centuries. Watch fishermen haul in their daily catch at dawn, savor fresh seafood at beachside shacks as the sun dips into the sea, or simply let the warm waters and Kerala’s legendary hospitality wash over you. This is Kovalam—a place where time slows down, the living is easy, and the Arabian Sea whispers secrets to those willing to listen.

I had booked us in Taj Green Cove resort and had called the hotel ahead for a pickup and we were at the property in around 15-20 mins. Now I have to confess it is a beautifully landscaped property, among the best I have seen. The only drawback is that it is built along a cliff and one really has to do a fair bit of walking to get around to the various restaurants and other facilities and although they have golf carts too.

Jasmine Bay is their multicuisine restaurant and it has very good views the infinity pool and beyond to the sea…The food quality, selection and service in all their restaurants/bar is very good.

So the next day we headed to the tours of the Backwaters In Poovar which is around 15 Kms from Kovalam Town. We took a motorboat from the Poovar jetty and very soon we were in in thick of the Backwaters..

It really was a very serene place and we had a wonderful couple of hours on the boat exploring the backwaters…

The next day we headed to the Neyyar Dam which is around 35 odd kms from Kovalam . Neyyar Dam has a wildlife sanctuary, a Lion Safari and beautiful lake ( of course ! ) ..

It was really thrilling to see the lions up close from a bus..

The Wildlife park had very few animals like deers . a crocodile enclosure etc but some of the paths and treks in the park were truly beautiful..

I would say that Kovalam is one place where you can easily spend 3-4 days and it really is a place you should visit once.

Planning Your Kovalam Kerala Trip

Kovalam Kerala is easiest to reach via Trivandrum International Airport, about a 30-minute drive away, making it a convenient base for exploring the wider Kerala coast. The best time to visit Kovalam Kerala is between November and February, when the weather is cooler and the Arabian Sea is calm enough for swimming and sunbathing along the cliffside beaches.

Where to Stay in Kovalam: Five Places

Kovalam has a good spread of stays, from heritage-style beach resorts to cliff-top luxury. Rates below are indicative starting points taken from published listings and booking sites; they swing widely between the November–February peak and the monsoon, so confirm current prices, taxes and breakfast inclusions before you book.

1. Taj Green Cove Resort & Spa (luxury) — The cliff-top resort where I stayed, beautifully landscaped with sea views, though expect a fair bit of walking or golf-cart rides between the restaurants and rooms. Typical rates run about ₹17,000–25,000+ per night depending on room and season.
2. The Leela Kovalam, a Raviz Hotel (luxury) — A large clifftop resort with a private beach, spa, pool and three restaurants. Listings show rates from about ₹6,000 in the quietest weeks, but expect roughly ₹17,000–32,000 a night in peak season.
3. Niraamaya Retreats Surya Samudra (luxury wellness) — A quieter, Ayurveda-focused retreat with private cottages set above the sea. Rates start from about ₹15,000 per night.
4. Gokulam Grand Turtle on the Beach (upper midrange) — A beachfront resort with sea-facing rooms, an Ayurvedic spa and a pool. Rates start from about ₹11,000 per night.
5. The Travancore Heritage Beach Resort (midrange) — A heritage-style resort with cottages and a pool, and the best value of the five. Rates start from about ₹6,000–7,200 per night.

Where to Eat in Kovalam: Five Places

Lighthouse Beach and Hawah Beach are lined with seafood shacks, so the catch of the day is the natural order. As a rough guide, listings put dinner for two at about ₹700–800 including drinks and lunch for two at ₹400–500. Menus change, so check current prices on the day.

1. Malabar Cafe — A Lighthouse Beach seafood spot with a menu built around the morning catch, such as pomfret and snapper; the butter garlic fish is a favourite. About ₹500 for two.
2. German Bakery & Waves Restaurant — Good for breakfast, coffee and baked goods on Lighthouse Beach; listings put snacks and bakes at roughly ₹70–200 for two.
3. Devi Garden Restaurant — Reliable Indian and Kerala food on Beach Road, open from morning to late evening. Roughly ₹400–860 for two.
4. Beatles Cafe & Grill House — Right on Lighthouse Beach, known for grilled prawns, fried fish and a Continental menu. Reasonably priced for a beachfront table, with dinner for two typically around ₹700–800 with drinks.
5. Bait at Taj Green Cove — A laid-back beach setting for fresh seafood with Indian and Asian dishes. It is a five-star resort restaurant, so expect hotel pricing, and check the current menu with the hotel.

Five Best Places to See in Kovalam

Kovalam is compact, so most of these can be covered over two or three relaxed days. Fees and timings change, so check locally before you go.

1. Vizhinjam Lighthouse — The red-and-white striped tower above Lighthouse Beach, with panoramic coast views from the top. Listed entry is ₹20 for adults and ₹50 for foreign visitors, and it is normally closed on Mondays (open roughly 10 am–1 pm and 2–6 pm).
2. Lighthouse Beach and Hawah Beach — The two main beaches, crescent-shaped and lined with cafes. Free to visit; go at sunrise or late afternoon for the best light.
3. Halcyon Castle — The former royal retreat of the Travancore family, now a luxury hotel. Public access is limited, so check with the hotel before visiting; it is best seen from the cliffs or by booking a meal.
4. Poovar Island — A backwater and sand-bar day trip south of Kovalam where the river meets the sea. There is no entry fee, and boat cruises start at about ₹1,200 for a private motorboat.
5. Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour — A working harbour near Kovalam that is best at dawn, when the boats bring in the catch. No ticket needed.
